Frequency Therapeutics
When Frequency Therapeutics, a growing biotechnology company, was looking to move their Woburn, MA, corporate headquarters, they relocated to the newly developed Hayden Research Campus in Lexington, MA—a burgeoning life sciences center 11 miles northwest of Boston. Officeworks collaborated with architecture and design firm Sasaki on the project, providing space planning, design, project management, and installation of new furniture across 70,000 square feet of space. The scope of the work consisted of 120 workstations, 25 private offices, multiple conference rooms, huddle rooms, focus rooms, wellness rooms, break out spaces, and 300 linear feet of architectural walls.
Frequency’s existing office space was outdated and not conducive to collaboration. Its closed floorplan had employees isolated in workstations with tall panels and divided offices. Frequency envisioned welcoming employees back to a home-like environment designed for collaboration, wellness, and future growth with an open, flexible floorplan and comfortable furniture.
As a biotechnology company focused on regenerative medicine, employee wellness is important to Frequency. To that end, Teknion height-adjustable tables were installed throughout the space to encourage movement during the workday. Comfortable lounge furniture was provided for employee-wellness rooms. Officeworks collaborated with ERDL to develop a custom, curved banquette for the “romper room,” a casual meeting space for informal presentations. Humanscale’s M/Connect monitor arm with an integrated docking station was installed at every workstation to provide easy access to technology and the option to have unassigned seating in a post-pandemic workplace.
The project kicked off in March of 2020, and the pandemic brought new challenges to the planning and design process. The team needed to design an open-office space that accommodated social distancing yet was future-proofed for a post-pandemic world. Visualizing the space and making design decisions without in-person client meetings presented another challenge. The Frequency team relied on Officeworks to guide them on the layouts. To ensure the client’s comfort, the Officeworks team conveyed the vision with a high level of detail, providing color renderings for every room and an animated walk-through of the entire space.
Completed in March of 2021, the new headquarters symbolized a fresh beginning for the Frequency team and allowed for a seamless transition back to the office from the work-from-home setting.
